Many new affiliate marketers don’t realize that it’s possible for their commissions to be stolen. Sometimes the program managers try to cheat affiliates out of their commissions. Sometimes other affiliates try to steal the sale. If you’re not careful, you could lose a lot of money – and you might not even realize it.
Here are some tips to help you protect your commissions, so that your hard work will pay off:
If you suspect, but aren’t sure, use an ad tracking script.
An ad tracking script comes in handy because it allows you to follow each and every visitor’s path on your site. It allows you to track the visitor’s click on a link to your site all the way to the purchasing page. If a large number of people make it to your affiliate page and you receive no commission, you know there might be a problem – especially if that particular product has a high selling rate. Monitoring your visitors’ steps is essential because it will give you some insight as to whether or not your commissions are being stolen. If you suspect that they are, you can take the necessary steps to protect them.
Redirect your affiliate link.
There are a variety of methods for you to cloak your link. How you go about doing so depends on which program you’re looking: WordPress, Dreamweaver, or some other type of website building software. For WordPress, the simplest method is to use a plug-in such as Affiliate Link Cloaker or Simple Link Cloaker. Just make sure that the plug-in you use is constantly being maintained by the developer.
You can also create another URL for your website that automatically redirects to your affiliate link. Having the alternative link comes in handy whenever you’re trying to advertise deals in a newsletter or on a forum.
Use Meta refresh.
Whenever you need to redirect people to a different page, you can use the “refresh” tag to let the visitor know the new URL. You can set the amount of time you want the use to wait before being automatically taken to the new page.
This method can be very beneficial – especially if the new URL is easier to remember than the former one. Instead of click2sell.username.whatever.com, it can be something shorter and easier to remember.
When setting up the meta-tag code, place in between the and portion of the HTML document. Also, don’t forget to purchase an actual domain name for the new URL!
Make the affiliate link invisible.
If your affiliate link is invisible, other affiliates can’t clean their cookies and replace your ID with their own. The affiliate link cloaker protectors you from losing a deserved commission.
Also, customers who prefer buying directly from the company rather than through a third party (you) won’t be able to delete your affiliate ID if they can’t even see it.
How do affiliate link cloakers work? They “cloak” the URL by displaying it in “Unicode” or “HTMO Unicode” instead of the natural characters. In other words, when people click on “view source”, they will see the numeric equivalents of your affiliate name.
Hopefully, these methods will give you a better understanding of how to protect your commissions from being stolen. You go through the trouble of putting together a website, promote it, write content for it and etc, so you should be able to earn the commissions you work hard for.
